The Dragon and the Princess

The Dragon and the Princess

Once upon a time in a magic kingdom, there was a magnificent castle and a beautiful brave princess who lived there with her mother, the queen and her brothers and sister. It was a warm summer, blossomed as spring, so the queen was dancing all the time and singing in the enchanted forest. The most incredible creatures lived there: colorful birds, restless butterflies, gorgeous hunting dogs, small, medium and big lady bugs, the fastest snails you’ve ever seen, squeaky squirrels and all different kinds of bugs and worms. The queen was very happy to visit them all every day. But there was only one animal which everybody feared, even the queen: The terrible evil dragon. On one of those sunny summer days, something unusual happened. One of the drawbridge doors was left open, and the terrible evil dragon entered into the magnificent castle. There he was, threatening, mad and looking for a dessert for the night. Nobody was home but the queen and the brave princess. When the queen realized she had unpleasant company, she was terrified and screamed loudly. As soon as the princess heard her mother’s desperate voice, she ran very fast to her rescue, but she didn’t imagine what she was going to go through. When she saw the furious dragon, she almost immediately took her sword and started fighting him. In an effort to take him out, she hit him twice on his head, but it wasn’t enough; it only made the dragon a little bit dopey, so she decided to set a trap. She cornered him and made him fall into it. The dragon was forced to surrender but was set free after he promised that he would never try to enter into the castle again. The queen was very pleased and proud of her daughter because she saved her life. The dragon learned his lesson: Never enter again into the house of a brave princess with a weapon in her hands because you will always lose.

The Dragon and I

Okay! Okay! Who am I trying to fool? I might have changed the story a little bit. Let’s be fair. Once upon a time in Mexico, there was a typical house and a not so brave girl (me) who lived there with her mother, her brothers and sister. It was a hot summer, blossomed as spring, and my mother swept the backyard all the time to keep it clean. The most common creatures of the region lived there: nice and ugly birds, ordinary butterflies, small lady bugs, no cute snails - only horrible slugs of all sizes - some spiders, a couple of beehives full of working bees, all different kinds of bugs, worms and ants, and of course my mom’s four gorgeous hunting dogs. My mom wasn’t very happy to have all those animals every single day, but she learned to get along with them. There was only one animal which she was afraid of: The terrible evil dragon. One of those excessively bright summer days something unusual happened. My sister left the patio’s door open, and the terrible evil dragon entered to the house. Nobody was home but my mom and me. There he was with his threatening eyes, confused and as scared as we were and looking for a place to hide. When mom realized she had unpleasant company, she got terrified and screamed loudly. As soon as I heard my mother’s hysterical voice, I ran very fast to her rescue, but I didn’t imagine what I was going to go through. When I saw the furious dragon, I almost immediately took the broomstick and started fighting him. In an effort to take him out, I hit him twice on his head, but it wasn’t enough. It only made the dragon a little bit dopey, so I decided to set a trap. I cornered him and made him fall into it. The dragon was forced to surrender but was set free out of the house. He didn’t promise he wouldn’t enter into the house again, but after the blows I gave him, I don’t think he would ever want to enter again. My mom was very pleased and proud of me because I saved her and I avoid her dogs got bitten by the dragon. The dragon learned his lesson: Never try to enter the house of a crazy woman with a broomstick in her hands you will always lose. Okay! Okay! I admit it: it wasn’t a dragon, but it seemed like it was. It was a disgusting, ugly, huge, fat Iguana. I swear to God it was one of those horrible ones, and when I saw it inside the house, it scared the hell out of me.

Me miró fijamente.

Yo no reí, permanecí seria.

¡Sácalo tú!, insistí, ¡yo no puedo!

No pude mirarlo mientras acometía tan despiadada labor.
